There’s No ‘Best’ Measurement Tool – Only the Right Tool for Your Deadline and Budget
When I first started managing metrology equipment purchases, I assumed the cheapest quote that met the spec sheet was always the smart choice. Three budget overruns – and one $15,000 redo – later, I learned that total cost of ownership (TCO) and delivery certainty matter far more than the price tag. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer; it depends entirely on your project timeline, accuracy needs, and tolerance for risk.
Over the past 6 years of tracking every invoice in our procurement system (roughly $180,000 in cumulative spending across 4 vendors), I’ve broken down the decision into three common scenarios. Each has a different recommended path – and sometimes the expensive option is actually the cheapest in the long run.
Scenario A: High Accuracy + Tight Deadline → Pay for the Laser Tracker (and sleep well)

If your project tolerances are within ±0.005 inch and you have 2-3 weeks of turnaround, you don’t necessarily need a laser tracker. A good set of micrometer heads or a digital microscope (like the ones used for surface inspection) can do the job – provided they’re properly calibrated and used by experienced technicians.
But here’s the trap: many procurement teams overlook the hidden costs of “cheaper” tools. I once compared 8 vendors over 3 months for a recurring dimensional measurement task. Vendor A (traditional calipers & micrometers) quoted $1,200 for the initial kit. Vendor B (a used FARO arm) quoted $2,400. - Do you trust the current process? If your team has been using the same micrometers for 5 years without a calibration audit, you’re probably in Scenario B or C – but the risk of drift is real. Invest in a $200 calibration every 12 months, or consider a FARO rental for a spot-check.
After 6 years, I’ve come to believe that the “best” tool is the one that gives you measurable certainty at the lowest total cost. For urgent, high-stakes jobs, a FARO laser tracker is often that tool – and yes, the $400 rush fee buys you peace of mind. For everything else, do the math carefully.
