If you’re buying a Faro laser tracker based on published accuracy specs alone, you’re leaving money and reliability on the table. I learned this the hard way in 2023 when I ordered our first Vantage unit and had to re-budget for a calibration plan that wasn’t included in the quote. The glossy PDF said ±10 μm + 0.5 μm/m. That number turns out to be just the starting point.
I’ve been the guy ordering these systems for a mid-size manufacturing operation since 2021—about $80,000 annually in metrology gear across 6 vendors. Not a huge budget, but enough that a mistake costs real money. Here’s what I wish someone had told me before I signed that first PO.
Why Specs Don’t Tell the Full Story
The published accuracy of the Faro Vantage—±10 μm + 0.5 μm/m—is measured under controlled conditions. Temperature, humidity, vibration. Your shop floor isn’t a lab. What most people don’t realize is that real-world accuracy depends more on two factors: operator skill and environmental compensation. The tracker can measure precisely. But if your operator isn’t trained on proper setups or the temperature swings 5°C between morning and afternoon, those numbers drift.
Here’s something vendors won’t tell you: the typical calibration interval is 12 months. You _can_ extend it to 18 months if you buy the extended calibration package, but most sales reps don’t mention that upfront. We found out when our first annual recalibration came due—$2,800 and a week of downtime. The extended plan would’ve cost $1,500 extra at purchase but covered two years. We didn’t know to ask.
The Vantage vs. Older Models
The Vantage is brighter and faster than the older ION. But the accuracy specs are essentially the same. What changed is the environmental tolerance—the Vantage can handle temperature shifts better. This was true back in 2018 when the Vantage launched. Today, it’s still the standard. But the industry has evolved. (That’s the thing about technology: what was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025.)
What Actually Matters in Practice
From an admin perspective, I track three things:
- Training cost per operator. The first year, we spent $4,500 on Faro’s certification course. That’s not in the spec sheet.
- Calibration turnaround. Ours took 7 business days. If you’re running continuous production, that’s a bottleneck.
- Software compatibility. Faro’s CAM2 software updated twice in 2024. Each update took a day to deploy and re-train.
I once compared quotes from three vendors. The cheapest unit was $1,200 less than the Faro. But their calibration plan was month-to-month with no discount, and their training was a PDF manual. The Faro saved us time. Time is money—but I can’t put that on a spreadsheet until after the fact.
When a Digital Caliper or Infrared Thermometer Makes More Sense
This might sound obvious, but it’s worth saying: not every measurement problem needs a laser tracker. If you’re checking surface temperature on a motor housing, an infrared thermometer from Fluke or Klein will do the job. A digital caliper is fine for small parts. I’ve seen teams overbuy because the marketing says “high accuracy.” The Faro is for volume, large-scale, or high-tolerance work. For a quick check on a bracket, save the $50,000.
But Here’s Where I Push Back
The “laser tracker replaces all CMMs” thinking comes from an era when stationary CMMs were the only option. That’s changed. Portable trackers are great—but they aren’t always more accurate. A fixed bridge CMM still beats a tracker on repeatability for small parts. We kept our old Zeiss CMM for fine work and use the Faro for large assemblies. Right tool for the job.
Also, the Faro Vantage’s ±10 μm + 0.5 μm/m spec is for single-point measurement. If you’re using it for scanning, accuracy drops to about ±50 μm. Nobody mentions that in the brochure. Not ideal, but workable—if you know.
The Bottom Line
The best advice I got was from a colleague: “Buy the Faro if you need portability and can train your operators. Buy a stationary CMM if you need rock-solid repeatability. Buy a caliper if you just need to know if something’s in spec.”
For most shops, the Vantage is overkill unless you’re doing large-part inspection or reverse engineering. It’s a workhorse, but it’s not a magic wand. And if you don’t budget for training and calibration, those published accuracy numbers are just numbers.
Pricing as of January 2025: expect $45,000–60,000 for a Vantage unit with basic accessories. Verify current pricing at Faro’s site (faro.com). Calibration plans and training are additional. And yes, you should ask about the extended calibration package—it’s not on the quote by default.
In Q4 2024, we evaluated two alternatives: a used Faro ION ($28,000) and a new Leica tracker ($62,000). The ION’s accuracy was fine for our needs, but it lacked the Vantage’s environmental tolerance. We went with the Vantage. No regrets—but I have a spreadsheet that says otherwise if we’re being honest.
